The benefits of mulch go well beyond looks:

Choosing the Right Mulch

We recommend using natural bark mulch for most planting beds. It looks clean, breaks down gradually, and improves the soil as it decomposes.
One type of mulch we do not recommend for garden areas is rubber mulch. Although it’s often marketed as a long-lasting solution, it doesn’t improve the soil, can retain excess heat, and may contain unwanted chemicals. It’s better suited for non-plant areas like playgrounds, not garden beds.

Yes. We recommend mulching annually for most properties. Even if your mulch hasn’t fully broken down, a fresh top layer helps restore color, renews weed protection, and maintains moisture control. Skipping years often leads to thinner coverage, more weeds, and drier soil.

Annual mulching also keeps your beds looking their best throughout the season. A light refresh each year ensures your landscape stays clean, protected, and low-maintenance.

Is Mulching Part of Spring Cleanup?

We get this question a lot. While mulch is often installed around the same time as a spring cleanup, it’s a separate service. Cleanups focus on leaf removal, pruning, and bed preparation. Mulch installation happens afterward and is scheduled based on weather, soil readiness, and the condition of your planting beds.
